The new format of holding the 2026 World Cup

According to the reports of “New York Times” newspaper and “Athletic” magazine, the Council of the World Football Federation (FIFA) is on the verge of approving the new format of the 2026 World Cup. The 23rd edition of the World Cup is going to be hosted by three countries, the United States, Canada and Mexico, and this edition of the competition will have 24 more games than the Qatar World Cup.

The format of the 2026 World Cup that will be approved by the FIFA Council is as follows:

  • The tournament starts with the presence of 48 teams in 12 four-team groups and each team plays three games in the group stage.
  • The top two teams of each group, along with the top eight teams that took the third place in the groups (32 teams in total), will go to the round of 16 and compete to reach the finals.
  • Since the clubs have to release their players for the World Cup, plus the days of the tournament and the rest days, the length of the tournament will be 56 days, which is the same as the 2010, 2014 and 2018 World Cups. Is.
  • 16 cities will host the tournament and 104 games will be held over 39 days, which means 24 more games will be held than the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
  • The interesting point here is that the number of games in the 2026 World Cup (104 games) is more than the total number of games in the first five rounds of the World Cup. The number of games in the 1930, 1934, 1938, 1950 and 1954 World Cups was a total of 101 games.
